WCC #4

Athletes of the Week

Trevor Dunbar  Portland

Tara Erdmann  LMU Morgan Haws BYU, Laura Suur USF

Athletes of the Month

Unlike the WCC, I award an Athlete of the Week, and don’t include the WCC Championship in selecting October Athlete of the Month, and follow a XC weekly calendar when Friday September 30 is Week #5 and an October meet.

Trevor Dunbar  Portland

Also considered  Miles Batty  BYU, Tyre Johnson LMU, Ganbileg Bor  USF, Willie Milam Gonzaga

Dunbar wins out over Batty due to quality of competition in their races

Tara Erdmann  LMU

Also considered Lindsey Drake, Gonzaga, Morgan Haws BYU, Laura Suur USF

Erdmann wins out based on UCR victory.  Last weekend, Erdmann beat Stephanie Marcy 2011 NCAA 10K #6 by 14 seconds, Haws beat Jen Bergman 2011 NCAA 10K #3 by 1 second, Suur lost to Kate Harrison 2011 NCAA 10K #2 by 12 seconds

  • West  region depth shows in how tightly packed it is at 15th
  • USF’s depth the past two seasons has blown up this season as LMU put 6 and SCU put 7 in front of their #5 runner
  • Ganbileg Bor has run his last race unattached for USF if the Dons want to avoid dropping to 6th place in the WCC after returning all 7 from a team that narrowly lost the title  in 2010
  • USF with Bor is the team to beat for 3rd, but all of the other 3 Jesuit schools, if they are on, can be beat USF
  • LMU women show how far the back end of the WCC are from the top half.
  • BYU gap from Haws to #5 is similar to LMU gap from Shea to #5, but advantage to LMU as Shea is LMU’s #2
  • USF emerging as women’s favorite with arrival of Suur
  • USD women beating SCU has also gotta to give Gonzaga confidence to be the 5th best in WCC
